The Problem is waste

It is time for us to realize we are drowning in our own garbage. Our landfill sites are overflowing with stinky, rotting garbage spreading disease causing bacteria, fungi, parasites, prions and viruses and leaching toxins into our soil and contaminating our water sources.

Garbage is everywhere

The Environmental Protection Agency reports the United States produces approximately 220 million tons of garbage each year. This is equivalent to burying more than 82,000 football fields six feet deep in compacted garbage. There are no statistics readily available for the entire planet, but considering the United States makes up about 4% of the world’s population, this is a LOT. I would personally estimate the entire planet’s yearly production of garbage to be somewhere in the vicinity of 4 to 5 BILLION tons.

  • Enough garbage to cover Texas twice. This also fills enough trucks to form a line to the moon.
  • Each American makes about 4 pounds of garbage daily. If the rest of the world produced as much as Americans, there would be about 10 MILLION tons daily, or 4 TRILLION tons yearly.
  • According to the European Environment Agency, in the year 2004 each European citizen generated 540 kg (1,191 lb) per person, and this number is predicted to increase to 680 kg or almost 1,500 lbs per person by 2020.

About one-third, or 30%, of your household garbage is organic material sent to rot in landfills, creating approximately one third of the harmful methane gases that are produced in the atmosphere. In terms of heat that is trapped & damaging to our atmosphere, this methane is over 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Why do we continue to do this? We need to build awareness. Thankfully there is a solution.

The Solution ~ The problems we solve
